Why continue your education?

Whether you are starting business, practicing a trade, have completed a degree program, continuing your education is a key ingredient in maintaining forward momentum in your field.

A lifetime of education also facilitates opportunities to find new passions, solve old problems, and pass down important knowledge.

If you are a specialist, adding the right combination of alphabet soup behind your name can gain true credibility in your industry and perhaps spark something in you that brings a positive change to your entire field.

The arguments for continuing education are legion. It doesn’t have to be a monster to take on, either. So what does it take to maintain the cycle of consistently continuing your education?

Invest in resources.

All education requires some investment. The most obvious investment is your time, but most education plans require financial investments. However, not all investments have to be huge to make a great impact on your future.

The keys to education are 1. having the drive to learn and 2. the resources to learn from. In our hyper-connected era, we have access to libraries and libraries of resources. Even if you prefer to learn “hands-on” it may be worth it to spend a little time tailoring your education to fit your needs.

Person to person hubs

School, networking groups, family, or friends might have knowledge in the industry you might be considering or learning about. It’s especially a privilege to learn from someone who is passionate about their subject

Books

There’s also the objects responsible for mass knowledge, books. They can be invaluable when it comes to continuing your education. Text books are helpful in challenging you to apply new knowledge and think critically about the subject.

Magazines

Magazines are usually industry specific and keep up with current changes and happenings. They are a great way to get familiar with a subject and learn the industry leaders. They frequently distribute information about conferences or workshops as well.

Internet

If you like online learning, google offers a search technique class. Having a better understanding of your search tools will improve your resource search findings. Otherwise you may be using efficient tools inefficiently.

Extensive narratives about your subject written by current industry experts can give you a forward-thinking edge compared to your non-reading competitors.

Local resource centers

Libraries, business development centers, small businesses; all may offer resources for continuing your education. Workshops and conferences frequently help distribute tools that aid in expanding industry knowledge.

Get the basics.

Firstly, you need to know what you need to know. If your exposure to your subject has only been brief or minor, learning what your subject consists of is your launching point.

Finding or building a syllabus from your resources is a great place to start. Be sure to get the basic information about any equipment or materials that are as close as possible to standard for your industry.

Once you learn the foundation of the subject, you’ll have a clearer idea of what areas of the subject are able to be explored further. Also, you’ll find that breaking your subject into its smaller parts will make planning your learning much easier.

Make the time.

Once you have an idea of what some of the smaller parts consist of, you will need to schedule your learning time. This can be broken down into habits to be practiced daily, weekly, monthly, etc.

This is a very difficult task for many people. If this is a struggle for you, I would suggest learning some time-management basics and calendar management methods to get you started.

You might feel like this puts you ten steps behind the starting line, but focus now on this area of discipline, and you’ll be running strides much faster than without this discipline.

Once you develop better time management habits, incorporate new skills to build in your new routine.

Even if you are only able to dedicate one hour of precious alone time at the end of the day to reading, applying a new skill, or planning your next steps, they add up a mountain of information new connections.

Apply what you learn.

One of the most crucial parts of learning is applying what you learn. As you go along, find ways to implement the things you are learning. If it’s a new software, find or brainstorm projects and work with that software. If it’s learning a piece of technology, find a new area of that tech to explore every week.

You might be awful at something at first, by putting it into practice in a way that generates feedback will eventually improve your skills.

Practical application of your education will help you retain what you’ve learned. Some may prefer this over simply reading it out of a book or watching a tutorial.

Repeat.

The idea of education is that it becomes lifelong. It allows us to identify our strengths and work out our weaknesses. We learn about our opportunities and can easily mitigate our threats.

Gaining familiarity with the process of learning can be applicable in all areas of your life. For this, continuing education is instrumental in growth within your industry and in your personal journey.why have you made this harder??
